Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that can cause both upper and lower respiratory infections. It belongs to the Pneumoviridae family, which also includes Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). Although HMPV was first identified in 2001, evidence suggests it has been around since at least 1958.
Symptoms
HMPV typically presents with mild symptoms, including:
– Cough
– Runny nose or nasal congestion
– Sore throat
– Fever
In some cases, especially in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, HMPV can lead to more severe illness, such as:
– Wheezing
– Difficulty breathing
– Bronchiolitis
– Pneumonia
Transmission
HMPV spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, close personal contact, and touching contaminated surfaces followed by touching the mouth, nose, or eyes. The virus is most active during the winter and early spring months.
Prevention
Currently, there is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for HMPV. Prevention relies on basic hygiene measures:
– Regular hand washing with soap for at least 20 seconds
– Avoiding close contact with sick individuals
– Covering the mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing
Management
Management of HMPV is supportive, focusing on symptom relief and respiratory support in severe cases.
Homeopathy can play an important role in strengthening your immunity and thus let you and your family fight against such illness.
